I know moms and cooking are supposed to mix, but let’s face it. Not all of us are the Betty Crocker type. Take myself for example. Frozen pizza? I’ve been known to undercook it. Spaghetti? Yeah, about those crunchy noodles…. Like I said, not all of us can be a Betty.
So when I learned about meal kit delivery services like Sun Basket, Blue Apron and Hello Fresh, I started doing my research.
What is a Meal Kit Delivery Service?
A meal kit delivery service delivers fresh ingredients with easy-to-read recipes that allow you to cook up tasty dishes for the whole fam. Honestly, every single meal I’ve cooked so far has turned out as expected and given the potential for user-error in my house, ahem, that is an impressive statistic!
Whether you’re a mom who can’t cook, or you’re just limited on time to plan and shop for meals, a meal-kit delivery service is one way to ensure several healthy, home-cooked meals a week. And if you’re anything like my family, who loves the convenience of eating out , you might save money, too!
My Experience Using Sun Basket
With all the different Meal Kit Delivery choices, I’m sure you’re wondering how or why I chose Sun Basket. The short answer is: I wanted the healthiest option.
Sun Basket is the only meal kit company that uses USDA-certified organic and non-GMO ingredients. They also provide Paleo, gluten-free, dairy-free and vegetarian selections. BOOM! For me, it was a no brainer to choose Sun Basket as I have a dairy intolerance and loved the idea of choosing dairy-free meals. My husband and I have also decided to start eating better to get rid of these mom and dad bods, so the idea of Paleo sparked my attention too.
The Price
Although Sun Basket was a tad more expensive than Hello Fresh or Blue Apron, I liked the idea of having healthy options and the peace-of-mind with organic ingredients.
The meal prices for Sun Basket is $74.93 per week, This includes 3 meals a week and breaks down to about $11.50 per person. I will note here that Blue Apron and Hello Fresh are about $10 cheaper however, you are not promised the organic ingredients like I mentioned above. This is ultimately why I choose to pay the little extra a week.
I also have to mention that the last couple of meals we’ve had, had leftovers because of the portion sizes, so I’d say it lowers the cost to about $9 each.

Unboxing Sun Basket
Our first box arrived on a Wednesday, as promised. The box had ice packs and it was still very cool when I opened it. The kit contained all the ingredients needed to cook 3 meals for 2 people and came complete with recipes and detailed instructions. The meats were vacuum-sealed and separated from the rest of the veggies, which was nice.
Our first three meals were:
- Thai Steak Salad with Seared Summer Squash
- Spicy Shrimp Diablo Tacos with Pickled Cabbage and Lime
- Salmon with Strawberry-Balsamic Glaze, Bulgur Salad, and Snap Peas.
I really appreciated the ingredients being organized and packaged separately for each meal. I’ve heard that other meal kit boxes do not organize ingredients by meal. I also loved how they included extra ingredients to garnish the meal. My husband was so impressed with the look of our meals. (MY meals that I COOKED!)
The Cooking Experience
Each recipe card was thoughtful and made with special notes and instructions. All the ingredients were perfectly pre-portioned, so several items only required opening and pouring.
Sun Basket also made sure to eliminate small tasks that may be more of a chore for some, such as cutting up cabbage. The cabbage was already pre portioned and cut up. This was especially helpful to me as a mom who can not cook to save her life. My husband was at ease too, knowing that he didn’t have to look over my shoulder as I slaved in the kitchen.
Here are some highlights from the Thai Steak Salad. It was seriously so delicious. Notice how everything is perfectly organized in it’s own packaging.
