Health & Beauty Tips- The Smother Mother

If you’ve been following along The Smother Mother, you’ll know that a few weeks ago I complained about hormonal acne.  I literally broke out all over my chin in a matter of days and it’s been the hardest thing to fight and get rid of.  In fact I’m still working on it. I needed a health and beauty miracle!

Luckily, after tons and tons of research and late nights on Pinterest, I’ve found (and tested) a few different things that have not only helped my face clear up drastically, but also just made me feel better all the way around.

So, here I am, sharing my two favorite health and beauty secrets that worked for me. Remember- I’m not a doctor. I’m just a mom. User discretion advised. 

Health & Beauty Secret #1: Diet Reboot

First thing first, I’ve done a complete reboot of my diet. I have cut out dairy (almost completely) and I’ve started adding more fruits and veggies into my diet. I’m also trying really hard to eat less processed foods.

Example of my meals on a given day

Morning: Scrambled Eggs (no milk mixed in) heated over coconut oil, and a cup of fresh fruit. (I’ve been buying the tub of fruit from publix that has it already cut up. It’s so much easier for me as I’m a super busy mama.) season the eggs to taste but don’t go overboard on the salt.

Every couple days or so I will throw in a slice of wholegrain toast with a smear of avacado.

Lunch: Sometimes i have a snack before lunch but I keep it healthy. Either a cup of edamame or an RX bar. For lunch, I normally cook up 2 chicken tenderloins in either extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil and eat it with either salad or fresh veggies. Again, I buy a container of already cut up veggies from publix.

Dinner: I’ve been buying the publix meal kits which run about $12.99 for a two person meal. I only choose dairy free meals that call for a protien and some kind of veggie. Sometimes the meals I choose come with rice. I end up switching it out for cauliflower rice (which I find in the frozen section) to save carbs.

Easy Cauliflower Rice Recipe: Grab some Green Giant Cauliflower Rice and add in some cut up squash, cranberries, and chopped almonds. A yummy and healthy side to go with any meal.

Health and Beauty for women

Keep in mind, this diet is NOT for weight loss. It’s to rewire my gut health. The more research I do, the more I learn that a majority of our skin problems come from our diet. So don’t think that by following this diet you will lose weight. Also- I’m not a doctor.

Health and Beauty Secret # 2: Multivitamin and Primrose

My second health and beauty secret for you is to add a multivitamin and primrose supplement to your daily routine.

A multivitamin will help bridge the gap to nutrients that you may be lacking and primrose is known to ease pesky hormonal symptoms and skin problems. (Don’t worry I’ll explain in more detail below)

I don’t have a preference when it comes to multivitamins. I have been eating a gummy vitamin from Olly. I’ve linked it for you below from Amazon. 

Evening Primrose

From regulating your mood swings to controlling your blood sugar levels, the benefits of evening primrose oil are plenty.

Evening primrose oil is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid that has been used to treat everything, including female reproductive tissues, blood channels, the respiratory passages, and the nervous system. This is the brand I purchased from Amazon:

The Health Benefits of Primrose 

1. Helps Treat PMS And Menopausal Symptoms

Women have been taking primrose oil to treat their hormonal imbalance since years, and all for a good reason. Studies have shown that the omega-6 fatty acids in the oil help treat menopausal and premenstrual symptoms (PMS).

When a woman undergoes menopause or PMS, she experiences symptoms such as bloating, breast tenderness, acne, or irritability. Making sure to get enough of omega-6 fatty acids can help balance the overall hormone levels in the body.

Another common symptom experienced by most women is hot flashes. A six-week clinical trial study was performed on 56 menopausal women to test the efficacy of evening primrose oil to treat hot flashes. It was found that primrose oil was highly effective in treating and decreasing the frequency of hot flashes.

2. Helps Control Diabetes

Evening primrose oil helps people with diabetes by preventing its common symptoms and complications. The GLA in the oil helps relieve nerve pain and prevent nerve damage by reducing the numbness and tingling that is experienced by diabetic patients.

A study was done on diabetic rats to test the effects of evening primrose oil on nerve conduction. It concluded that the oil rapidly reversed the nerve conduction deficits. It also acts as a vasodilator, thus helping to reduce blood pressure.

3. Helps Improve Heart Health

Evening primrose oil is excellent at maintaining heart health by lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. It also lowers the prevalence of blood clots, thus protecting the body against heart diseases and stroke.

A 2014 study was conducted to determine the cholesterol-lowering, antithrombotic, and anti-inflammatory effects of evening primrose oil. A group of 10 rats was fed a high-fat diet for four weeks, and myocardial infarction (MI) was induced in their system.

Treatment with evening primrose oil for six weeks improved their blood lipid profiles and cardiac recovery.

4. Enhances Skin Health

Evening primrose oil is excellent for the overall health of the skin. This magic oil is known to be a great moisturizer. Not only does it make the skin soft, but it also supplies it with essential nutrients and healthy fats, making your skin look youthful and flawless.

The anti-inflammatory properties of this oil also help reduce swelling, redness, itching, and rashes on the skin.

Mix equal amounts of shea butter and evening primrose oil and apply on your skin every night before going to bed. You will wake up with beautiful skin every morning.

5. Treats Acne

Evening primrose oil is known for treating hormonal imbalance in the body. This, in turn, helps reduce acne and breakouts on the face.

Just apply 2-3 drops of this oil to your face every day, and your pimples will start clearing up faster than usual.

You can also consume this oil twice a day in the capsule form to treat acne. They say it takes about 4 to 6 weeks to really start seeing results. I’m on week two and have already seen an improvement in my face.
