Top 10 Essential Oils for Anxiety and Depression

For my girls struggling with anxiety- this one’s for you. Most everyone feels a little anxious occasionally but many people suffer from some type of anxiety disorder.

Anxiety is a medical condition that can weaken your body and leave you vulnerable to all kinds of health problems. Left untreated it can also increase the risks of having panic attacks and/or compulsive behavior.

Anxiety is also often accompanied by depression. Depression may cause you to have poor sleeping habits, lose interest and pleasure in activities that you love, experience weight changes, and disengage from the outside world.

Anxiety and depression affect hundreds of millions of people throughout the world, some in more significant ways than others.

One of the most common ways to treat anxiety disorders and depression is with prescription medicine. However, they often have bad side effects. That’s where essential oils come in.

They’re all natural, they usually do not have any negative effects when used correctly, and they may even enhance your treatment and allow you to control your anxiety [[naturally]] with time.

Please keep in mind, they are not a cure for the illnesses themselves. If you believe you may be suffering from anxiety or depression, consult your physician. These conditions may require more comprehensive, clinical treatment and monitoring.

Essential oils shouldn’t be a replacement for traditional treatment options, such as therapy or medical management. Rather, essential oils should be used to meaningfully augment those treatment methods.

When stress or anxiety are related to everyday challenges, essential oils may be all that you need to find balance. In either case, essential oils may be just one component of achieving holistic wellness.

Unlike many traditional medicines, essential oils typically don’t have many–if any–negative side effects when used correctly. In some cases, these oils can be used to help alleviate the side effects of other necessary medicines.

Ten of the best essential oils to use for anxiety include:

1. Lavender

Lavender oil, when topically applied or inhaled, is absorbed by the body and passes into the bloodstream to promote relaxation, mental sharpness, and sleep.

2. Lemon

Lemon helps improve your overall mood, body functions, and immune system. This is why you enjoy better sleep with lemon.

3. Ylang Ylang

Studies show that Ylang Ylang can help slow down your heart rate and induce comfort.

4. Chamomile

Chamomile has antidepressant effects that helps reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.

5. Clary Sage

This essential oil works as an antidepressant. It helps calm the nerves, and relieve hypertension. It also works as a mild sedative.

6. Valerian

Valerian root helps you beat anxiety by easing the tension in your body, allowing you to relax.

7. Peppermint

Peppermint is a commonly used essential oil on patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. It is also popular for its ability to treat indigestion.

8. Patchouli

Patchouli essential oil is used to reduce depression, relieve anxiety, and lessen stress. It acts as a mild sedative, as well.

9. Geranium

Geranium is a flower that, when turned into an essential oil, can help calm the mind and body. Its calming scent is even considered as a natural perfume. Geranium oil also promotes positive emotions, and serves as a natural sedative.

10. Sandalwood

Sandalwood oil can be used to help you stay in the restorative sleep phase longer. This effect can help you wake up the next day, feeling extra refreshed.

These are not the only oils that will help with anxiety but they are some of the most popular ones.

4 Methods of Treating Stress and Anxiety with Essential Oils

While essential oils may be used in a variety of ways, there are 4 common methods of delivery. These are room diffusion, inhalation, massage, and as a bath additive.

1. Diffuse

To calm the chatter in your head and uplift your spirit, add a few drops of relaxing lavender, meditative frankincense, or your preferred essential oil to a room diffuser for use throughout the day.

2. Inhale

Another method to treating anxiety and depression is by inhalation. The best way to perform the inhalation technique is to place a few drops of a gentle, non-irritating, and diluted essential oil, such as orange, rose, or vetiver, in the palms of your hands. Rub your hands together to warm and release the properties of the oil. Next, cup your hands over your nose and take five deep, slow breaths to help quiet feelings of anxiety or stress.

3. Massage

Add 10 to 12 drops of your preferred essential oil or oil blend to 2 ounces of carrier oil (grapeseed, jojoba, sweet almond, etc.) for use during a luxurious and restorative body massage.

4. Bath

Add five to 10 drops of your preferred essential oil to your bath water to combat feelings of anxiety or stress. Pro tip: Don’t add essential oils to running water as they will evaporate at a higher rate. Instead, add them once the tub is filled and just before getting in.
